Barriers to physical activity of stroke survivors in Singapore: A face-to-face cross-sectional survey

Background Physical activity (PA) levels of stroke survivors are far from recommended levels. To develop specific interventions targeted at improving PA after stroke, there is a need to consider the barriers faced by survivors. Objective use comprehensive Barriers Activity Questionnaire for People with Mobility Impairments (BPAQ-MI) identify intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational and community in Singapore. Methods We conducted face-to-face survey recruited Singapore National Stroke Association platforms. Participants were eligible study if they 21 years old above, had medical diagnosis weak arm or leg. Results 38 participated survey. More than half moderate moderately severe disability, needed assistance activities daily living walking. Of 63 spanning across domains, top three most commonly reported include lack accessible classes/programs fitness centre (21/38; 55%), staff (19/38; 50%) feelings tiredness/fatigue (18/38; 47%). 10 barriers, four intrapersonal two barriers. Conclusions want participate PA, but often limited associated centres, self environment wider community.
